Car Ferry From St Thomas to St John: How the Barge Works

A car earns its place on St John when you are staying several nights, sleeping outside Cruz Bay, or visiting beaches on your own schedule. It stops earning its place on a single-day visit. The barge adds a second ticket, a second timetable and a loading queue to a day that already depends on the passenger ferry.

The National Park Service points visitors toward the taxis waiting at the Cruz Bay ferry dock. It also warns that parking lots can fill by 10:00 am. For a single day on the island, walking off the ferry and taking a taxi usually beats shipping a car across.

Think about the return before you commit. A vehicle ties your afternoon to the last barge of the day, while a foot passenger has more return options. Weighing the two? Start with the passenger ferry from St Thomas to St John. Add a rental car from St Thomas only if the itinerary truly needs one.

For the Red Hook car barge, follow Route 32 to the marine terminal and look for the vehicle staging area. Ask dock staff which operator you should queue for before joining the line. The passenger boarding area is separate.

Vehicles load at the car-ferry dock beside the Urman Victor Fredericks Marine Terminal in Red Hook. The Port Authority calls it the Noel “Breeze” Boynes Sr. Car Ferry Dock. It is a separate berth from the passenger ferry, so navigate to the barge dock rather than to the passenger terminal.

On St John, barges land at the Theovald Moorehead Dock and Terminal at Enighed Pond, the island's cargo port. That is not the passenger dock in the middle of Cruz Bay. Set your navigation to the vehicle terminal, and expect to drive the last stretch into town.

The Port Authority names three operators on this route: Big Red Barge, Global Marine and Love City Car Ferries. Each runs its own vessels and publishes its own departures on the Port Authority schedule page. Read all three timetables together rather than only the first one you find.

The departure table was checked on October 6, 2026. All times are local. Confirm seasonal sailings and early departures with your operator before travel.

The Port Authority advises arriving 30 minutes to an hour before departure. Loading is in arrival order, even with a reservation. An online ticket does not guarantee space on a particular sailing.

Tickets are not interchangeable between operators. If you buy a round trip, check that the same company offers a suitable return. The Red Hook ramp also collects a separate port-use fee: $3 for cars and small or medium SUVs.

As checked on September 16, 2026, the Port Authority lists one nonresident vehicle fare for all three operators. It is $50 one way and $65 round trip. Its Big Red Barge row also shows a resident fare of $35 one way and $50 round trip. Ask the operator how passengers in the vehicle are counted, because the schedule lists the vehicle fare only.

Each operator publishes its own departures on the Port Authority schedule page, and those timetables change with the season and with each company's maintenance. Read the current version on the day you travel rather than trusting a saved screenshot. Allow for the queue ahead of you at the ramp.

Love City Car Ferries takes bookings on its own site and says its ferries fill quickly at peak times. It also notes that the price depends on the vehicle. Arrive early for a specific departure anyway, especially on a Sunday afternoon or on the day a flight home leaves.

Rental policy is the part travelers get wrong, because it is set per company rather than by the ferry. Budget's St Thomas rental policy states plainly that you can take the rental car on the car ferry to St John. We have not verified any other company's terms, and you should not assume they match.

Ask the question before you book the vehicle, not at the ramp. Get the answer in the rental agreement or in writing from the company. Ask two further things while you have them. Does roadside assistance cover St John, and what happens if the car breaks down there?

Renting on St John itself is the clean alternative. It removes the barge fare, the queue and the policy risk, and it puts the car where you actually need it. That trade is worth pricing before you assume the barge is cheaper.

That makes the crossing question part of choosing the company, not a detail to settle afterwards. Compare what St Thomas offers for your dates, then ask each candidate before you pay.

Traffic in the U.S. Virgin Islands drives on the left. That is the territory's official rule, and it catches visitors out on day one. Take the first few junctions slowly, and pay attention at every turn out of a parking lot, which is where the habit slips.

Parking in Cruz Bay is the second surprise. The National Park Service says designated spaces near its visitor center need a park parking permit. It also warns that lots can fill by 10:00 am, and that illegally parked vehicles are fined and towed. Plan where the car will sit before you drive off the ramp.

The National Park Service advises against bicycles on St John because of road conditions. That tells you something about the roads a car has to take. For a beach day on St John, the car mainly buys an early start and a trunk for your gear. It does not buy a faster drive.
