Day Trips From St John to the BVI: Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda

Jost Van Dyke is the short answer for anyone basing a trip on St John. It is the closest BVI island to St John. The crossing is brief enough that a day there is genuinely a day, not a commute with a swim in the middle.

The island is small and the draw is a single sheltered harbour with beach bars along it. That is either exactly what you want or exactly what you do not, and it is worth being honest about which before booking.

The constraint is not distance but paperwork and sailings. You clear into the BVI on arrival and back into the United States on return. The schedule of crossings is shorter than a USVI ferry timetable. Build the day around the last boat rather than the first.

Day visitors arriving from the other island add a leg at each end. Read the St Thomas to St John ferry times before booking a BVI trip on the same day. Two return sailings then have to line up rather than one.

Virgin Gorda is further, and the Baths are the reason people go. Enormous granite boulders are piled along the shore, forming shaded pools and passages of clear seawater. There is nothing like them in the US Virgin Islands.

Treat it as a full day and not a flexible one. The crossing is longer and the connection is usually not direct from St John. The site deserves unhurried time, not a scramble back to a boat.

If the trip has one BVI day in it and a mixed group, Jost Van Dyke is the safer booking. If the boulders are the thing you came for, give Virgin Gorda the whole day and plan nothing after it.

The British Virgin Islands are a separate country, as checked on September 20, 2026. Crossing from St John is leaving the United States, and both directions have their own formalities, however short the boat ride feels.

On the BVI side, expect to show a passport. The territory's tourism board puts it as travellers arriving by sea may be required to present a valid passport or other documents. Treat a passport as the document that always works. On the way home, US Customs and Border Protection requires a WHTI-compliant document at a sea port of entry. For an adult that means a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or a Trusted Traveler card.

The exception people half-remember does not apply here. CBP's easier rule covers closed-loop cruises that leave and return to the same US port on the same ship. A ferry day trip to the BVI is not one of those.

The practical consequence is simple. If one person in the group has no valid document, that person does not come. Finding out at the dock is an expensive way to learn it.

Most visitors do this as an organised trip rather than by scheduled ferry. One booking then covers the crossing, the timing and usually the clearance queue.

Compare operators on the things that break a day. Ask which island the trip lands on, how long you get ashore, and whether clearance time sits inside that. Ask what happens when the sea is against them.

Price is the least informative number in the comparison. A cheaper trip that spends an hour longer at a customs dock is not cheaper in the way that matters. The same logic applies to any boat day from St Thomas.

Ask what the in-water time actually is before paying for a crossing to get it. A BVI trip that clears customs twice will rarely beat snorkeling in St John on time in the water. The national park's own sites are a taxi ride away.
